Concept:
A Sensible approach to Sustainability and Innovation

 

The residential building set in the secluded and calm neighborhood of the capital’s Bashundhara locale creates a setting that is sensitive to sustainability and natural priorities. Designed by Trikon Architect’s, the design philosophy was to harmonize the building form and fabric with the site and climate; thereby reducing ecological impacts and achieving energy efficiency whilst providing human health and comfort.

 

The residential apartment is built within a site area measuring 3600square-feet that has a south-west orientation. Since the front façade is adjacent to the road on the west, blocking the view overlooking the surrounding scape with solid surfaces was not desired. The design team implemented thoughtful measures in designing the building with sufficient buffer to limit the heat gain. The service core is positioned to the west, while the public layer comprising the living room and dining area that faces west is designed with a double façade with angular wooden louver on the outer layer and window glass on the inside. This intervention effectively blocks the solar exposure and allows the living spaces to spill outside and ensures a high level of natural light. For the private layer consisting of the bedrooms, a screen wall is devised that allows solar radiation to filter through, while also permitting a sense of privacy. Each floor with cantilevered planter-balconies provide additional shading to the west façade.

 

The units are organized concerning the programmatic variability determined by the inhabitant and the floor-area-ratio. The small units take the lower levels, the larger rental units are placed middle, while the duplex unit moves to the top. This strategical placement of functional zones made possible to integrate green features and communal spaces to offset the concrete structure. This melding of scales and spaces guided the design team with architectural form and volumetric choices; incorporating a new architectural language.

 

An interesting element is introduced in the building by adding creepers at the south-east axis of the duplex unit. A spiral staircase leading is set adjacent to this natural vertical plantation that provides a cool shaded space, dappled with the light that enters through this natural green façade. On the highest level, a roof-terrace is created, which includes a shallow pool, fragmented garden, and spaces for social gatherings and contemplation of the perimeter urban view. Internally, all the rooms are strategically planned to serve cross-ventilation and ensuring an ample amount of light enters deep inside.

 

The residential project exemplifies architecture where each design decision sought to respond to its environment. An architecture that adapts, not that is imposed.

Concept:
The umbilical idea of designing the multi-family Residential Apartment was a playground which is a central courtyard surrounded by lush greenery adjacent to the entrance. There is a community space designed on the roof-top hatches green and a space for relaxation for the dwellers. In addition, competency in natural ventilation and daylighting was ensured whilst generating efficient functional layout in spatial arrangement. The vertical greeneries on different levels offer a calm and green living environment. All these sustainable environment-friendly features convey a hierarchical coherence with the built environment increasing occupant comfort.
